Spotlight – Shaker Heights, Ohio

The city of Shaker Heights, located in the northeastern part of Ohio, is a beautiful place for people to raise a family or continue growing their family. Shaker Village was incorporated in 1912, and was said to be a suburban retreat from the industrial of Cleveland, Ohio. By 1931, the charter was approved and the City of Shaker Heights was established. A combination of the beautiful landscape, as well as its close proximity of the bustling city, Shaker Heights was, and remains, a great place to raise a family. Throughout the 1950’s, Shaker Heights began to experience racial conflict, and the Ludlow Community Association (LCA) was born. It was a time of unity for the community and continues to remind residents what a strong community tie feels like.


There are nine neighborhoods in Shaker Heights and each has its own uniqueness about it. The brothers who developed the city wanted to ensure that their vision was maintained throughout the rapid growth of the area, and so the nine neighborhoods were born, each one more unique than the next. The neighborhoods are named after the nine original elementary schools: Boulevard, Fernway, Lomond, Ludlow, Malvern, Mercer, Moreland, Onaway and Sussex.


The area has a lot to offer in terms of educational needs for all ages. There are five lower level elementary schools, an upper level elementary school, a middle school and a high school, together totalling just under 6,000 students. The school district is known for academic excellence and commitment to diversity, and it provides each student the proper tools and resources they require to be successful.
